The Pursuit of More: Why We’re Never Satisfied

Before we start, ask yourself: Have you ever really craved something? What did you do to get it?

Craving and love can make people act like animals, driven by instinct without really understanding why. Some people go beyond their limits to get what they want. However, humans are rarely satisfied with what they have. They always want more, and this cycle of wanting never ends. It can create a negative atmosphere, where people compare themselves and try to change their status, believing that having more will bring happiness.

The Endless Cycle of Desire
For example, someone from a poor family might think, "I’ll be happy if I were middle class," while a middle-class person might think, "I’ll be happy if I were rich." This cycle of wanting will never stop. The point isn’t that poor people should stay poor, but that this constant dissatisfaction makes people feel lower than others, even though everyone is at their own level in life.

Change Through Generations
As time goes on, things change, but that doesn't always mean better conditions. It often means changing how we use what we already have. Schopenhauer said, “A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants.” This means that while we can pursue what we think we want, we don’t always understand why we want it, and even when we get it, it might not make us happy.

Finding Happiness in the Present
Instead of always chasing after something more, we should find happiness in what we already have. True satisfaction comes from appreciating what’s in front of us, not expecting things that may never happen.

Breaking Free from Comparisons
To be happy, we need to stop comparing ourselves to others. Craving and love should be focused on who we are, not on things or status. True fulfillment comes from within, not from always wanting more.
